Clare Mulholland, Head of Recruitment at Storage Scholars

Meet our 'Student Storage Specialist' of the Week- Clare Mulholland! Clare joined the Storage Scholars team in January 2022 and manages everything related to our internship programs. Originally from Chicago, IL, Clare is now a proud resident of Washington, D.C. When she's not providing college students with dynamic opportunities you'll find her spending time with family and friends around the dinner table, trying out a new coffee shop, or maxing out her latest run time.

My Role at Storage Scholars

Hello readers! My name is Clare Mulholland, and I am the Head of Recruitment here at Storage Scholars. Though my official role focuses on recruiting, hiring, and training our incredible cohort of campus interns, I wear many hats within the team. I can frequently be found working on operations plans, strategizing best marketing efforts, or problem-solving with team members. You might even catch me moving boxes around the DMV area!

A Little About My Background

I bring a unique background to the Storage Scholars team. I am currently completing my undergraduate degree in Global Business, Economics, and Spanish at Georgetown University. As a student, the skillset and perspective I bring to our company vary from the rest of the team, and my schedule differs from a traditional 9 to 5. The beauty of Storage Scholars being a remote company is that I can finish my degree while making an impact here! Every team member brings a wonderfully different toolbox to the table, and we all learn from each other and collaborate. Many voice memos and idea dumps are found throughout our text threads!

I grew up in Chicago, IL, and my background has always been very academic in nature. I am also creative and spent most of my childhood in musical productions. Anything that pushes me to grow and learn is right up my alley. I am a natural leader, problem-solver, and go-getter. If there is a job to do, I will find the best and most efficient way to complete it. I love to think outside the box. Storage Scholars not only enables me to personally do this, but it allows me to push others to do the same. I am so grateful for the opportunity to share my passion.

Clare hiking in the Amazon

In my free time, I love to travel, go for runs, or spend time with family and friends. I had the opportunity to take two of the most incredible trips of my life this year, and I’m confident they’ll never be topped! I traveled through Ecuador and was able to visit Quito, the Amazon, and the Galapagos at the beginning of the Summer. In August, I spent three weeks traveling through Dubai, Kenya, and Tanzania, with most of my time spent on Safari. This was the furthest I’ve ever been from home and was the most incredible experience! I couldn’t keep up my running routine while I was gone, as running through the bush with lions and cheetahs is not advised! I have grand plans of running a half marathon in 2023 and a full in 2024, though.

A Typical Day at Storage Scholars

So, what does a typical day for the Head of Recruitment look like? I always kick my day off by checking our Slack channels and sifting through my email. This helps me acquaint myself with anything going on with other team members or within the company. From there, I do three main things: recruit candidates, interview candidates, and work with our hiring department to onboard candidates. These three tasks take on many forms depending on the day, the university, and the timeline, but that makes my role so much fun! No two days are ever the same.

You might find me messaging candidates on LinkedIn, meeting with university career departments, fostering positive relationships with university administrators at our universities, or strategizing the best ways to get in contact with the best talent at every university. My role enables me to meet and get to know many different people. The relationship-building aspect of my work is exciting and fulfilling.

How I Started Working at Storage Scholars

My time with Storage Scholars began in January 2022. I had just moved for the fourth time in one year and was incredibly burned out. I was sick of moving and knew there had to be a better way for students to tackle the moving process. I stumbled upon Storage Scholars’ internship program at Georgetown through a recruitment email and immediately fell in love with the company. As I shared the opportunity with those close to me, they continually reiterated that this was the exact type of company I was meant to work for. As I met the team through my interviews and onboarding, I immediately knew this was the place for me. I completed our Spring Operations and Marketing Internship; the rest is history!

The Best Part of the Job

Since I was an intern not too long ago, the most rewarding part of my job is coaching our new interns through the program. As a coach, I can bring my own experience into our conversations. This lends itself to an incredibly unique and effective coaching relationship that is mutually beneficial. I learn from our interns daily and strive to teach them all I can. Our internship program allows every student to think, act, and execute like an entrepreneur. Our students emerge from the program with the skillset, expertise, and network to successfully begin their own businesses. Being an entrepreneur requires a particular professional skill set that can be challenging to develop. We work to allow students to build this with the safety net of a team of successful entrepreneurs behind them.

Storage Scholars is the best student storage company out there, but we are so much more than that. We are a team of dedicated, driven, gritty individuals ready to do whatever it takes to serve our customers. We are passionate about our service and embody our mission. We have taken summer storage for college students, a seemingly monotonous task, and made it a convenient and seamless experience for students, parents, and universities alike. We measure success based on how many students we can help with an otherwise challenging and stressful process. We strive to help every college student in the country focus on what matters most at school and not the stress of moving every year. We are well on our way to doing just that!

Thanks for hanging out with me today and learning about my Storage Scholars story!
