I Tried Running a Side Hustle in College and My Dorm Almost Became a Warehouse

Sam Chason

January 30, 2026

When I started my side hustle in college, I thought the hardest part would be finding customers. I was wrong.

The hardest part was space.

The Dream vs The Reality

I started small. Just a few products, a simple Instagram page, and orders from friends. It felt exciting. People were actually buying what I was selling.

Then the boxes started piling up.

At first, it was just one corner of my room. Then under the bed. Then in my closet. Soon, my dorm looked less like a bedroom and more like a storage room.

Living in a Mini Stockroom

Everywhere I turned, there were packages. Shipping supplies on my desk. Inventory stacked by my door. Returns waiting to be sorted.

My roommate joked that we were running a fulfillment center. It was funny until it was not.

Studying became harder. Relaxing felt impossible. Even sleeping felt cramped.

I loved my business, but it was taking over my space.

Why Dorm Rooms and Businesses Do Not Mix

Dorm rooms are designed for living, not storing inventory. I learned that the hard way.

Products need organization. Supplies need space. Orders need room to be packed. Trying to do all that in a tiny room is stressful and inefficient.

I was spending more time moving boxes than actually growing my business.

The Storage Solution That Changed Everything

I decided to store my extra inventory and supplies instead of keeping everything in my dorm. Using Storage Scholars gave me a place to keep stock without cluttering my living space.

I kept only what I needed for daily orders in my room. Everything else stayed organized and out of the way.

It felt like I finally separated my life from my business.

How It Helped My Business Grow

Once my room was clear, I could focus better. I packed orders faster. I tracked inventory more easily. I even had space to plan new ideas.

Having storage did not just help my room. It helped my mindset. My business felt real, not chaotic.

What I Learned From Being a Student Entrepreneur

College is the perfect time to experiment with ideas. But space is a real resource, just like time and money.

You do not need a warehouse to start a business. You just need a smart system.

Storage Scholars gave me that system without the stress of long term leases or expensive storage units.

Final Thoughts

Running a business in college is exciting, but your dorm should still feel like home. Separating your inventory from your living space can make a huge difference.

If you are starting a side hustle and your room is disappearing under boxes, it might be time to rethink where you store your stuff.

Trust me. Your brain and your business will thank you.
