I Studied Abroad for a Semester and Did Not Know What to Do With My Stuff

Sam Chason

February 2, 2026

When I found out I was accepted to study abroad, I was excited. New country, new classes, new experiences. Then reality hit me.

What was I supposed to do with everything in my dorm?

Packing for a Life I Was Leaving Temporarily

Studying abroad is weird. You are not fully moving out, but you are not staying either. I had clothes for every season, books, decor, kitchen stuff, random things from home. Some of it I needed abroad. Most of it I did not.

My dorm contract ended. My lease was up. But I was coming back.

It felt like pressing pause on my life.

The Stress No One Warns You About

Everyone talks about visas, flights, and packing lists. No one talks about the stress of what to do with your belongings.

Shipping everything home was expensive. Selling or donating felt permanent. Carrying it all abroad was impossible.

I felt stuck.

Why Temporary Moves Are the Hardest

Moving permanently is simple. You pack and go. Temporary moves are harder because you want everything when you return.

I wanted my winter clothes, my dorm decor, my textbooks, and my sentimental items waiting for me. I just did not want them taking up space while I was gone.

Finding a Storage Solution That Made Sense

I decided to store what I did not need abroad. Seasonal clothes, extra bedding, kitchen items, posters, and personal keepsakes.

Using Storage Scholars made it easy. They picked up my items, stored them securely, and I knew they would be there when I came back.

It felt like putting my college life in safe hands while I went on an adventure.

How It Changed My Study Abroad Experience

Once I stored my things, I felt lighter. Mentally and physically. I traveled with only what mattered for that semester.

I did not worry about my belongings back home. I did not stress about where everything would go when I returned. I could focus on classes, travel, and new friendships.

That peace of mind was worth everything.

Coming Back Felt Like Coming Home

When I returned, getting my stuff back felt comforting. My room felt familiar again. My clothes, decor, and little memories were waiting for me.

It made the transition back to campus smoother and less overwhelming.

What I Learned From This Experience

College is full of temporary transitions. Internships, study abroad, co-ops, semester breaks. You are constantly moving between phases of life.

You do not need to give up your things to move forward. You just need a smart place to keep them.

Storage Scholars gave me that flexibility.

Final Thoughts

Studying abroad changed me, but it did not erase my college life back home. Having storage allowed me to explore without losing what I built.

If you are planning a semester away, think about where your things will live while you chase new experiences. Future you will be grateful you planned ahead.

And trust me, coming back to your own stuff feels really good.
