I Did Not Realize How Much My Dorm Was Stressing Me Out Until I Fixed It

Sam Chason

January 9, 2026

I always thought I was just tired. College tired. Busy tired. I blamed my schedule, my classes, and late nights. It never crossed my mind that my room might be part of the problem.

But looking back now, my dorm was stressing me out every single day.

Living in Constant Clutter Felt Normal

At the start of the semester, my room was fine. Everything had a place. As weeks went on, things slowly piled up. Clothes I barely wore. Shoes I only used once in a while. Old notebooks. Extra bags. Random stuff I kept telling myself I would deal with later.

Eventually, later never came.

My floor became storage. My chair turned into a clothing rack. My desk was never actually clear. I got used to stepping over things and digging through piles just to find what I needed.

It felt normal because everyone around me was doing the same thing.

The Mental Weight I Did Not Expect

What surprised me most was how much it affected my mood. I felt irritated for no clear reason. Studying in my room felt impossible. Even when I had free time, I could not fully relax.

Every time I looked around, I saw things I needed to clean, organize, or move. It was like a constant reminder of unfinished tasks.

That kind of background stress adds up fast.

Deciding to Change Something Small

One night, I finally had enough. I did not want to reorganize for the hundredth time. I wanted space. Real space.

I packed up everything I did not use daily. Extra clothes. Seasonal items. Old books. Things I cared about but did not need right now.

Using Storage Scholars made the process simple. I did not need a car or help from friends. Once those items were gone, my room felt completely different.

What Changed After

The difference was immediate. My room felt lighter. Getting ready took less time. I could actually sit at my desk and focus.

I slept better too, which I did not expect. Waking up in a clean, open space made mornings feel calmer instead of rushed.

It was not about having less stuff. It was about having the right amount of stuff around me.

What I Would Tell Other Students

College is stressful enough. Your room should not make it worse. You do not need to throw everything away or live like a minimalist. You just need to be honest about what you actually use every day.

Storage Scholars helped me keep the things I value without letting them take over my life. That balance changed everything.

Final Thoughts

If college feels overwhelming, look at your space. Not your schedule. Not your phone. Your space.

Sometimes the biggest relief comes from something simple. Making room to think. Making room to breathe.

And once you feel that difference, you will never want to go back.
