A Storage and Shipping Guide for West Coast Students

Sam Chason

September 4, 2026

If you go to school on the West Coast, your move-in day probably will not line up with your high school friends' at all. While most of the country is unpacking in mid-August, UCLA's University Housing move-in window runs from September 13 through September 20, and UC San Diego's residence halls have opened on a similar late-September timeline in recent years. That later start is normal for California's public university system, but it creates a specific kind of scramble for students and families who are used to a mid-August deadline.

Here is what that scramble actually looks like, and how to get ahead of it.

Why West Coast Move-In Feels Different

A late-September move-in date means a longer, hotter summer with your things scattered between a dorm room, a rental car, an airport, or a storage unit back home. It also means a shorter runway once move-in finally arrives, because the whole California housing system tends to fill up in the same one or two week window. If you are flying in from out of state, coming from another country, or simply do not have a car to load up and drive to campus, that compressed timeline is the hardest part of the whole year.

Storage Scholars is a student focused moving, storage, and shipping company built around exactly this kind of calendar. We bundle four services into a single order: free packing supplies delivered to your door, door to door pickup and delivery by our own movers, climate protected storage, and shipping boxes home or to your first apartment. Instead of hiring a separate mover, renting a separate storage unit, and coordinating a separate shipping company, it is one sign up and one team.

Getting Your Things There Before You Land

For students who are flying to school, or who simply do not want to spend move-in day hauling boxes through an airport pickup line, Ship to School is usually the better option than checking extra bags or shipping everything yourself.

We mail a free packing kit, five medium boxes, tape, and five prepaid FedEx labels, straight to your home before you leave. You can also have packages shipped directly from retailers like Amazon, Target, Walmart, or IKEA to our facility, so a new mini fridge or a set of sheets can arrive alongside everything you packed. Every item is priced per piece received, and most students end up shipping somewhere between four and twelve items total. The part that matters most on a tight move-in schedule: delivery goes to your actual dorm room, not the campus mailroom, so you are not tracking down a package cart on your first day. We cover this in more detail in Ship to School Moving Services for College Students.

Because West Coast move-in falls later in September and demand peaks hard in that one to two week window, we recommend starting the Ship to School process by mid-August so everything has time to arrive and get logged before your assigned date.

If You Are Already Storing for the Summer

If you are a current UCLA or Southern California student who stored belongings over the summer, your move-in experience is really about the delivery side of that same order. Storage Scholars sets complimentary pickup and delivery dates around each partner campus's finals week and move-in week, so the delivery back to your new room is already timed to UCLA's own move-in calendar rather than a generic date you have to guess at. If your plans change and you need a pickup or delivery outside those windows, a custom date is still available, though it carries an added charge (roughly $300) because it requires sending a dedicated truck and crew rather than folding your stop into the standard campus route.

Pricing works per item and by size tier rather than one flat monthly rate, generally $14 to $40 per item per month, with a four month minimum term. That means your final bill reflects what you actually chose to store, not a number set before you packed a single box. You can see the full pricing breakdown and worked examples on the college storage pricing page, and our full how it works and pricing overview walks through the entire process from pickup to delivery.

Delivery is not limited to on campus dorms, either. We deliver to off campus housing within roughly three miles of most partner schools, on top of standard dorm to dorm and dorm to apartment moves. Because pickup and delivery windows fill up fast during the concentrated week or two around finals and move-in, we ask students to book at least two to three weeks ahead of their preferred date, especially heading into a peak season like the UCLA and UC San Diego move-in wave.

What Actually Happens on Move-In Day

A lot of the anxiety around move-in day comes down to one question: who is actually handling my stuff, and can I trust them? Storage Scholars uses our own trained, background checked, uniformed student movers rather than subcontracted day labor, and every crew follows the same handling protocols on every job. Every item we pick up is also measured, photographed, and logged into a digital inventory system you can check through your online portal, along with its size tier and storage details, so there is a record of exactly what was picked up and where it stands through delivery.

At a subset of our partner campuses, we also offer Key Access, a contactless option where the university grants our team access to the residence hall. That means you can pack, label, and lock your door before you leave for the summer, and your things are waiting in your room when you get back, without needing to be there in person for either pickup or drop off. If your school offers this, it is worth checking for on your school's page, since it is not the default everywhere we operate.

Why Parents Trust the Process

If you are a parent reading this because your student is the one flying to Los Angeles or San Diego alone this September, a few facts tend to matter most. Storage Scholars reports a 2025 damage claim rate of 1.4%, compared with a 17.7% industry average, and every order includes complimentary basic protection, with $1,000 Basic and $2,500 Premium upgrade tiers available before pickup if you want more coverage. We are also registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation under USDOT number 4067000 and MC number 1544271, and operate as a licensed broker of moving and storage services rather than an unregistered local mover.

Storage Scholars carries a 4.7 out of 5 average rating across more than 10,000 reviews, and Mark Cuban, who invested $250,000 in the company on Shark Tank in 2022 and is a Vanderbilt parent himself, has said Storage Scholars "saved me more time and grief than I could have imagined." You can see school specific reviews and details on our UCLA page, along with coverage for other campuses across the Los Angeles area on our Los Angeles city page.

A Simple West Coast Move-In Timeline

  • Mid-July to early August: Confirm your school is on our list at storagescholars.com/schools. If you are shipping ahead, order your Ship to School kit.
  • Mid-August: Start shipping boxes and any online orders to our facility so everything has time to arrive before your move-in window opens.
  • Late August to early September: If you are storing locally over the summer, confirm your delivery date lines up with your campus's assigned move-in window.
  • September 13 to 20 (UCLA) or your assigned window: Move-in day itself. If you booked Ship to School or Key Access, your things should already be in your room.

Not every West Coast campus is covered yet, and if yours is not on our current list, our comparison of Storage Scholars and Storage Squad can point you toward an alternative rather than leaving you to figure it out alone. But if you are heading to UCLA, or to one of the other Los Angeles area schools we serve, the goal is simple: you land, you unlock the door, and your room is already set up. That is a much better first afternoon than a rental car full of boxes and a September move-in date that snuck up on you.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is move-in for UCLA and UC San Diego in 2026?

UCLA's University Housing move-in window for fall 2026 runs from September 13 through September 20. UC San Diego has opened general move-in in that same mid to late September stretch in recent years, with exact 2026 dates released by the university closer to the start of the term. Both fall well after the mid-August move-in most of the rest of the country sees.

Do I need a car to move into a West Coast dorm?

No. Storage Scholars picks up, stores, and delivers items using our own crew, so students without a car, including out-of-state and international students, do not need to rent a truck or find someone to drive them in. If you are flying in, Ship to School lets you send everything ahead so it is waiting in your room instead of riding with you on the plane.

How much does Ship to School cost, and how far ahead should I order it?

Ship to School includes a free packing kit with five medium boxes, tape, and five prepaid FedEx labels, and charges per item once your boxes and any retailer packages arrive at our facility, with most students shipping four to twelve items total. Because West Coast move-in falls in a compressed one to two week window in mid to late September, we recommend starting the process by mid-August so everything has time to arrive and get logged before your assigned date. Full pricing is on the Ship to School cost page.

Is Storage Scholars a legitimate company?

Yes. Storage Scholars is registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation under USDOT number 4067000 and MC number 1544271 and operates as a licensed moving and storage broker. The company appeared on Shark Tank in 2022 and received a $250,000 investment from Mark Cuban, and it carries a 4.7 out of 5 average rating across more than 10,000 reviews.

What if my delivery date does not line up with my move-in appointment?

Complimentary pickup and delivery dates are set around each partner campus's own finals and move-in week, so for most students the default date already matches their assigned window. If your plans change and you need a different date, a custom pickup or delivery is still available for an added charge, roughly $300, to cover a dedicated truck and crew.

Does Storage Scholars serve UC San Diego?

Storage Scholars currently serves UCLA and several other campuses across the Los Angeles area. Campus coverage changes as the company adds new schools, so UC San Diego students should check storagescholars.com/schools to confirm current availability before booking, or see our comparison with Storage Squad for an alternative if a campus is not yet listed.

Not every West Coast campus is covered yet, and if yours is not on our current list, the comparison page above can point you toward an alternative rather than leaving you to figure it out alone. But if you are heading to UCLA, or to one of the other Los Angeles area schools we serve, the goal is simple: you land, you unlock the door, and your room is already set up. That is a much better first afternoon than a rental car full of boxes and a September move-in date that snuck up on you.
