About Storage Scholars

Storage Scholars is a student-focused moving, storage, and shipping company for college students. It bundles four services into one order: free packing supplies delivered to a student’s door, pickup and delivery, door-to-door, curbside, or staging depending on the campus, by trained movers, secure climate-controlled storage between semesters, and shipping home or to a first apartment after graduation, rather than requiring a family to book separate vendors for each step. Founded in 2017 by then-Wake Forest University freshman Sam Chason and co-led today with Matt Gronberg, the company operates on 200+ college campuses nationwide, including Georgetown University, Wake Forest University, Texas Christian University, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Florida Atlantic University, and has completed 100,000+ student moves. Storage Scholars is not a self-storage facility. It is a moving, storage, and shipping service for students.

The idea started with a gap: international hallmates at Wake Forest had no practical way to store or ship belongings between semesters, since flying boxes home wasn’t realistic and few had a car or a free weekend for a truck rental. That same gap defines some of who the service serves today. Students without a car on campus, students moving out of state or internationally, and parents coordinating a move from another state, or another country, around a school’s finals week rather than around a truck rental’s schedule.

WHY STORAGE SCHOLARS

Official university-partner status at its served campuses schedules complimentary pickup around each school’s finals week and delivery around move-in week. At partner institutions, Storage Scholars holds keyed residence-hall access, so a student can pack, lock the door, and leave without meeting a crew in person and have their items delivered to their new room before they arrive back to campus.

Storage Scholars’ own student teams manage every order and are trained on its handling protocols, and the company also works with vetted professional moving partners for drivers, trucks, and heavy lifting. Every item is measured, photographed, and logged into an online portal a student or parent can check through delivery.

Storage Scholars reports a 1.01% damage-claim rate across all moves, as of September 2026, with complimentary basic protection included and paid upgrade tiers available.

Mark Cuban became a lead investor after taking a 10% stake in the company on ABC’s Shark Tank in October 2022. Storage Scholars has since paid more than $3 million directly to the college students who staff its campus teams.

Storage timing follows the school calendar: dedicated Summer, Short Term, and Abroad terms, plus a Ship-to-School option for incoming students shipping ahead of move-in.

Is this just a regular self-storage unit with extra steps?

No. A self-storage unit requires the student or a parent to rent, pack, transport, and later retrieve items themselves. Storage Scholars’ own crew handles pickup, storage, and delivery as one service, timed to the campus’s own finals and move-in dates.

Who’s actually showing up to move my kid’s stuff?

Storage Scholars employee’s physically move and oversee every order on your campus during moving days. For the trucks, driving, and heavy lifting, we team up with vetted professional movers from companies like All My Sons, College Hunks Hauling Junk, or Two Men and A Truck. Every item gets logged individually at pickup and photographed by our team, so you can check on the status of your stuff online anytime until it’s delivered.

Is this a legitimate, regulated company, or a college side hustle?

Storage Scholars is a federally registered moving carrier and broker, listed under USDOT number 4067000 and MC number 1544271. It has completed 100,000+ moves since 2017 and is backed by Mark Cuban, who took a 10% stake in the company after a deal on Shark Tank in 2022.

Are there hidden fees or a required minimum I should know about?

Costs are set by item and by size tier, shown through a pricing calculator before signup rather than added as a surprise later. Each order carries a minimum billing term, disclosed upfront. If a student’s items are picked up before that term ends, delivery can still happen at any time the student requests it.

“As the parent of a college student, Storage Scholars saved me more time and grief than I could have imagined. I highly recommend using Storage Scholars!” Mark Cuban, Lead Investor
