Storage Scholars Lawsuit: What Happened at the University of Richmond, and What We Changed
If you've searched for "Storage Scholars lawsuit," you've probably landed on stories about the University of Richmond from 2025. I want to explain what happened, what we did about it, and what we've changed since.
What happened
In May 2025, we stored belongings for three University of Richmond students at a third-party storage facility we had contracted with. In August, when our team went to retrieve those items for move-in delivery, some of them were missing.
There's no good version of that phone call. Students count on us to have their things waiting when they get back to campus, and for these three students, we couldn't. That's on us to own, even though the items were in a partner's facility, because our customers trust Storage Scholars, not the facility.
How we handled it
We worked directly with each of the three affected customers to make them whole. Our goal was simple: no student should be left worse off because of where their belongings were stored.
That goal comes from a policy we had then and still have now: when a customer's belongings are lost while in our care, our policy is to refund their service fees and cover the replacement value of their items.
One of those customers later filed a lawsuit. That matter has since been amicably resolved, and we have no further comment on it.
What we changed
We ended our relationship with the facility involved. More importantly, we took a hard look at how we choose and oversee storage partners, and we made two key changes:
- Tighter vetting for storage partners. We now vet every storage facility more thoroughly for unit access control before we trust it with our customers' belongings.
- Security requirements. Every facility we work with must have security cameras and must be willing to provide footage and cooperate with us on request.
The bigger picture
We've served hundreds of University of Richmond students since 2020 and tens of thousands of students nationwide. At Richmond specifically, students have rated us 9.2 out of 10 across 378 feedback surveys, and our damage claim rate there is 0.41%.
Those numbers don't erase what happened to these three students, and I'm not citing them to brush it off. I'm citing them because one incident doesn't define our service, and we've used it to make that service better.
