The idea started with a gap: international hallmates at Wake Forest had no practical way to store or ship belongings between semesters, since flying boxes home wasn’t realistic and few had a car or a free weekend for a truck rental. That same gap defines some of who the service serves today. Students without a car on campus, students moving out of state or internationally, and parents coordinating a move from another state, or another country, around a school’s finals week rather than around a truck rental’s schedule.

At partner institutions, Storage Scholars holds keyed residence-hall access, so a student can pack, lock the door, and leave without meeting a crew in person and have their items delivered to their new room before they arrive back to campus.

Storage Scholars’ own student teams manage every order and are trained on its handling protocols, and the company also works with vetted professional moving partners for drivers, trucks, and heavy lifting. Every item is measured, photographed, and logged into an online portal a student or parent can check through delivery.

Storage Scholars reports a 1.01% damage-claim rate across all moves, as of September 2026, with complimentary basic protection included and paid upgrade tiers available.

Mark Cuban became a lead investor after taking a 10% stake in the company on ABC’s Shark Tank in October 2022. Storage Scholars has since paid more than $3 million directly to the college students who staff its campus teams.

Storage timing follows the school calendar: dedicated Summer, Short Term, and Abroad terms, plus a Ship-to-School option for incoming students shipping ahead of move-in.

Is this just a regular self-storage unit with extra steps?

Are there hidden fees or a required minimum I should know about?

Costs are set by item and by size tier, shown through a pricing calculator before signup rather than added as a surprise later. Each order carries a minimum billing term, disclosed upfront. If a student’s items are picked up before that term ends, delivery can still happen at any time the student requests it.
