Philadelphia has one of the densest concentrations of colleges and universities on the East Coast. UPenn and Drexel share University City, Temple sprawls across North Philadelphia, Villanova sits 30 minutes out on the Main Line, and Curtis Institute occupies a few blocks in Rittenhouse Square. Together they produce a spring move-out crush that turns West Philly's narrow streets into a slow-motion traffic jam of rental trucks, double-parked cars, and students hauling furniture down rowhouse stoops.
The traditional approach -- rent a U-Haul, drive to a self-storage place on Delaware Avenue, load your stuff, repeat two months later -- doesn't work well in Philadelphia. The city's rowhouse architecture means tight doorways, steep staircases, and no elevators. Street parking is a daily battle on blocks near campus, and the Philadelphia Parking Authority is famously unforgiving. A 5x5 storage unit at Extra Space Storage or CubeSmart near University City runs $80 to $130 per month, but that doesn't include the cost of getting your stuff there.
Storage Scholars handles everything. We come directly to your dorm room or off-campus apartment, pack and pick up your belongings, store them in a climate-controlled facility, and deliver everything back when you return. Five Philadelphia-area schools. One service that works the same way at every campus.
Philadelphia summers combine Atlantic seaboard heat with urban humidity. Temperatures hit the 90s routinely from June through August, and the city's dense brick and concrete architecture traps heat in ways that make non-air-conditioned spaces unbearable. Humidity regularly exceeds 70%, which is the threshold where mold begins to grow on fabric, paper, and leather. A non-climate-controlled storage unit in South Philly or along the Delaware River waterfront can turn into a sauna by mid-July.
Storage Scholars' summer storage protects your belongings with consistent climate control for the entire summer. Electronics, musical instruments (especially relevant for Curtis Institute students), textbooks, and wooden furniture all stay at stable temperature and humidity levels.
We align pickups with each school's academic calendar. UPenn and Drexel wrap up in mid-May, Temple typically ends in late April to early May, Villanova finishes around the same time, and Curtis operates on its own conservatory schedule. We coordinate with each timeline individually.
Coming to Philadelphia from out of state? Our ship-to-school service lets you send your belongings ahead and skip the overloaded car or expensive checked bags. We receive your shipments, store them, and deliver everything to your dorm room on move-in day.
This is especially useful for UPenn freshmen in the Quad and Drexel students in Towers or Race Hall, where move-in day traffic on Locust Walk and Chestnut Street makes unloading a vehicle an exhausting, multi-hour process. Ship ahead, fly in, and walk into a room that's already set up.
Philadelphia's housing stock creates unique moving challenges. The city's signature rowhouses have narrow front doors, steep interior staircases, and tight hallways that make moving large furniture a puzzle. Off-campus housing near UPenn in Spruce Hill and near Temple in North Philly tends to be in older buildings with the same constraints. Drexel students often live in the high-rises along Chestnut and Market, which require elevator reservations and loading dock scheduling.
Our team knows the building-specific logistics: which UPenn dorms have service elevators, which Temple halls require security escorts, which Drexel buildings have loading docks vs. street-only access. We handle inter-campus moves, dorm-to-apartment transitions, and end-of-year storage with the same process.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. We provide full dorm room pickup and delivery for University of Pennsylvania students across all campus housing, including the Quad, Hill College House, Kings Court, and the high-rises along Spruce Street. We know that College Butler also serves UPenn through their residential services partnership. The difference is that Storage Scholars provides the same service level across five Philadelphia-area schools, so if you transfer, move to a different campus, or have belongings at multiple locations, we offer broader coverage. Both services offer dorm pickup and climate-controlled storage.
College Butler is UPenn's official residential services storage partner, and they do good work for Penn students. Storage Scholars differentiates in two ways. First, we serve five Philadelphia schools (UPenn, Drexel, Temple, Villanova, and Curtis), not just one. If you transfer or need to coordinate storage across campuses, we're the multi-school solution. Second, our all-inclusive pricing bundles everything -- pickup, packing supplies, climate-controlled storage, and delivery -- into one price with no per-item fees. College Butler's pricing structure differs. Choose based on what matters most to you.
Storage Squad also serves Philadelphia students, with pricing around $20 per oversized item and separate rates for standard boxes. Storage Scholars uses an all-inclusive model that covers pickup, packing supplies, climate-controlled storage, and delivery in one price. You won't get charged extra for oversized items, heavy boxes, or stair carries. Both services are legitimate options -- the choice comes down to whether you prefer per-item or all-inclusive pricing.
Absolutely. Off-campus rowhouse pickups are some of our most common jobs in Philadelphia. We know the challenges: narrow 30-inch doorways, steep stairwells with tight landings, no building elevators, and limited street parking. Our team carries everything out of your apartment, no matter the floor or the building layout. There's no extra charge for stairs, tight spaces, or difficult access. This is Philadelphia -- we expect rowhouses.
Yes to both. Curtis Institute students have specialized storage needs, and we handle them carefully. Grand pianos and harps require specialty movers, but standard orchestral instruments (violins, cellos, woodwinds, brass), amplifiers, and electronic equipment all fall within our standard service. All storage is climate-controlled, which is critical for wooden instruments and bows that are sensitive to Philadelphia's humidity swings between seasons. We handle instruments with extra care during packing and transport.
Yes. Our Philadelphia-area coverage includes Villanova and the Main Line. While Villanova's suburban campus has fewer of the parking and access challenges that define University City or North Philly, move-out logistics are still complicated by limited loading zones and the volume of students all leaving during the same week. We pick up from Villanova residence halls and deliver back in the fall, with the same service you'd get at UPenn or Drexel.
Book by late March. Most Philadelphia schools end their spring semester in late April to mid-May, and pickup slots fill quickly. Penn and Drexel in particular have tight move-out windows, and the combination of rowhouse logistics and parking restrictions means our teams need careful scheduling. Early booking guarantees your preferred date, and we'll coordinate with your school's specific move-out timeline.
