6 Minutes

Living on-campus in college is a rite of passage, but the struggle to transition out at the end of the year can be real. Whether it's dealing with procrastination and lack of organization or just feeling stressed about finances, move-out day can damper your college experience. But here's a secret: You don't have to let move-out day ruin things if you know how to maneuver like an experienced pro! That's why we've got simple tips about how to absolutely slay your college move-out day so that you exit campus life stress-free and ready for the next adventure ahead. Read on to learn more!

Before Move-Out day

1. Sign up early and pick your date

You'll want to sign up with Storage Scholars as soon as you know your summer storage plans. Reserve a spot and put down your $50 deposit immediately so you aren't left scrambling at the last minute (Don't worry, deposits are refundable, but we don't think you'll be requesting a refund because this is a service you'll be grateful for).

Once you sign up, you can schedule your pick-up date. This is the date that you want the movers to come and pick up your items. At some schools, though, you don't need to schedule a day or time because our partnership allows us to enter your dorm after you move out. So all you need to do is leave your belongings in one neat spot for us, and we'll grab everything. To see which group your college falls into, visit our Campus Dates page on our website and find your school for instructions regarding your pick-up date.

2. Tell your friends… to earn a referral bonus

Saving money always puts me in a better mood on moving days! Once you sign up, you'll be given a unique link to share with your friends to sign up too. Share it on social media or text your friends in a group chat because that link is as good as gold! Not only will they be grateful for the reminder, but the code will score you both a discount on your final invoice! On moving day, you can grab lunch before saying your goodbyes since you'll have extra cash and extra time.

3. Get plenty of boxes

No last-minute store runs for moving boxes, tape, or bubble wrap are needed so long as you take advantage of Storage Scholars' Supply Distribution Days! Our team of student interns will be all set up on campus at specific dates and times with loads of our custom boxes and supplies for you at no cost. You can take as much as you need for your belongings to be safe all summer. If you know you have lots of electronics or breakable items, take extra bubble wrap too. We want to ensure everything is safe and secure all summer, so we'll have it available for free. Plus, you'll meet your Campus Co-Founders and Marketing Managers–the college students responsible for bringing Storage Scholars to your campus, overseeing your move-out, and being there again to deliver your items back to you at the end of summer. And if you're fortunate, you might be able to snag some of that cool Storage Scholars merch you've seen around campus.

4. Pack like a Pro

Take it from us–there's a right way to pack and a wrong way! This is not our first rodeo, and we want to share the knowledge. From defrosting your refrigerator to packing your items in a particular order for maximum protection, we've developed some essential packing tips that can help a ton. Read our blog on how to prep for your summer move and then wake up on moving day knowing you're a step ahead of your friends.

On Move-Out Day

1. Set the mood

For an extra boost of energy, blast your favorite tunes while packing up. While most of the hard work will be done by Storage Scholars, there will likely be some last-minute packing and cleaning, and you'll still need to say your goodbyes. Pick something upbeat or positive to leave your dorm on a good note.

2. Remember to clean! Sweep, mop, vacuum, and dust before you leave

While clearing out your dorm, you'll likely find some dust bunnies you never knew were there! Giving your dorm a final cleaning before you go is generally a good idea. Wait until most of the oversized items are moved to one location and sweep or vacuum, so you don't leave anything behind. If you feel extra ambitious, check out our cleaning blog to make your old room sparkle and shine. With all the time that you've got left on your hands, thanks to Storage Scholars, you may as well make good use of it!

3. What to expect on move-out day with Storage Scholars

What you can expect from Storage Scholars can differ depending on your campus.

At our "Key Access Partnership" schools, you can expect to lock up your room and leave whenever you want. You won't be on any schedule or need to wait around for the moving trucks. We'll come to your dorm and move your stuff long after you're gone.

At our "Traditional Partnership" schools, you will have scheduled a pick-up day and window of time in advance. That's only because we don't have a key to your dorm, and we'll need your help to access it. On the morning of pick-up, you'll get a call or a text from your mover reminding you of your time and giving you a closer estimate of when they plan to be there. You can log in to your Storage Scholars portal to check the live queue to see what your place is in line. Then just let us in when we knock, and we will do all the rest! A team of us will arrive in our black tees. When we arrive, we'll take a picture of your belongings and will be ready to haul away your stuff. We'll have dollies, ramps, and trucks and have been trained to safely get your belongings from point A to point B. Say goodbye and trust that your stuff is in good hands and will return to you at the end of summer.

4. Leave your extra boxes out for the movers

If you have taken additional boxes you didn't use, make sure to set them aside, and the movers will collect them, preventing you from being charged a fee of $10 per box.

5. Say goodbye to your roomies

Take your last selfies, exchange summer plans, and go do something fun (hopefully, they called on Storage Scholars too). Since you've got plenty of help, you'll have enough time to do the rounds and even grab coffee or lunch before heading off for the summer.

6. Go enjoy your summer

You know that feeling you get when you realize you've forgotten something? That feeling like you left your stove on or forgot to pack your phone charger on vacation? You won't get that feeling because we will take care of everything for you this time. We'll snap the pictures, haul your stuff to storage, and keep it safe. We've got your number if we have questions, and we'll keep you informed at every step. You can even log into your portal to see the uploaded pictures and confirm that your items made it to storage. It's so easy that all you'll need to worry about is getting ready for summer break!

College move-out day doesn't have to be a total nightmare! You can easily prepare and stay on top of the structure of your move and slay the chaos. From deciding whether to drive or fly, calling a student storage and moving company like us, correctly boxing items, and categorizing all belongings, you can exhaust considerable prep work that will keep you from being overwhelmed by the process. With time management and organization, you're sure to accomplish college move-out in a more creative way that takes away any troublesome hassles. And for those last moments of packing, enlisting Storage Scholars' expert movers is a great way to ensure your prized possessions safely from Point A to Point B (and back to point A after summer break) - without the extra stress! Let's work together so you can slay your move-out! Reach out to Storage Scholars today to see how we can get all your belongings safely relocated as quickly and efficiently as possible.
